IPv6 is a cornerstone of the Future Internet. To ensure both business continuity of the European industry and society to get benefits from IPv6 added technologies, the European Commission (EC) requested that by 2010, 25% of the users should be able to connect to IPv6. This ambitious target has not been achieved and while IPv4 pool of addresses dried out in February 2011, the estimated and effective level of IPv6 deployment is still below 5%. Pointing out the emergency of the issue, the European Commission is continuing its support to IPv6 deployment through its digital agenda and calling the member states to foster IPv6 adoption.

In another effort to expand the use of the new Internet protocol within the region, LACNIC has installed in its office an IPv6 training lab within the framework of the 6DEPLOY-2 project, with equipment donated by Cisco Systems as part of the cooperation agreements of the project, sponsored by the European Commission.

It is targeted to different types of readers, including end users, SOHO, enterprise, education and research networks, and ISPs. It also includes a section on how to deploy several IPv6 services.

"We are starting to see very close ahead of us the consequences if we don't make the switch to IPv6," she warned, presumably to a very receptive audience.

Located at the Department of Telecommunications at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, the lab is an integral part of an international network of IPv6 training and research facilities and is connected to some 20 similar centers around the globe. Cisco donated the lab’s networking and communications equipment.

This will be followed by sessions in Barcelona, Valencia, León, Zaragoza, Santander, Bilbao, Logroño, Pamplona, Mérida, Ceuta, Murcia, Seville, Málaga, Las Palmas, Toledo, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela and Oviedo.

The Plan includes 10 points covering all the aspects required for the public administrations to tackle the IPv4 exhaustion problem with a firm commitment for the deployment of IPv6, including eGovernment services, and the cooperation with private organisations in order to make sure that IPv6 is deployed in every network in the country.

In the next months a free training program will be provided in the 20 major Spanish cities.

The rule states that when only five large blocks of IP addresses remain, one will be handed out to each of the world's five regional Internet registries. With the latest allocation to APNIC, the number of remaining IP address blocks is down to five.

On June 8, 2011, dubbed “World IPv6 Day,” participants will enable IPv6 on their main services for 24 hours.

Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) is a version of the internet protocol that is designed to replace the current Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4). The reason for this is that the range of addresses used on the internet is nearly exhausted.

This latest allocation means that the IPv4 free pool dipped below 10% in January, just nine months ago. Since then, over 200 million IPv4 addresses have been allocated from IANA to the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs).

This program defines and certifies courses, engineers and trainers with Silver & Gold Logo levels and requires IPv6 implementation on the web site of the education program.

The event main focus is the usage of IPv6 in Smart Buildings.

Registration is required, as only 70 seats are available.

The Number Resource Organization (NRO), which represents the registries, said on Tuesday that less than 10 percent of all IPv4 addresses remain available, threatening the future network operations of all businesses and organisations unless ISPs and businesses step up their migration to IPv6.

Cisco and the Georgian Research and Educational Networking Association (GRENA) today announced the opening of the first laboratory for training and research in Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) in the Caucasus region. Cisco donated the lab's networking and communications equipment.

This is jeopardising Internet growth and socio-economic development in these regions.

All computer and electronic devices that connect to the web and other online services uses Internet Protocol Addresses. The current Internet Protocol, IPv4, provides a limited number of such addresses. According to estimates will be exhausted by 2011. The new Internet Protocol, IPv6, allows every citizen and organization to have as many Internet Addresses as they need to connect every conceivable device to the Internet: mobile phones, car navigation systems, home appliances, industrial equipment, etc.
